Is self-rated Health a Sufficient Proxy for True Health?
Choi Yo-Han

Abstract
This study examines whether self-rated health is a sufficient proxy for true health for those over 45 years old by using the 1st to 6th waves of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Self-rated health is measured by 5-point Likert scale which measure the current health of interviewees. Variables for true health include 'hypertension; diabetes or hyperglycemia; cancer or malignancy; chronic lung disease; liver disease; heart disease; cerebrovascular disease; psychiatric disease; and, arthritis or rheumatism¡¯. Observations are coded 1 when interviewees are taking medication, receiving treatment, or experiencing difficulties in daily life due to a specific disease, and the others are coded 0. Age and age squared are used as control variables, and the random-effects model and fixed-effects model are used as analytical methods. As a result, except for chronic lung disease and liver disease in the fixed-effects model for women, all other disease predict self-rated health significantly. Also, the prediction probability shows that self-rated health reflects the variation of true health to a considerable extent, and in particular this is true with cancer or malignant tumors, psychiatric disease, and cerebrovascular disease.
